For Secondary Schools

Making connections between Maths and Computer Science

Work Group Lead – Nicola Fareham

Nicola is Maths Hub lead for the Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub and is also Executive Head of Maths at Harrogate Grammar School. In 2015 Nicola took part in an exchange studying the teaching of maths in Shanghai. Since then she has designed and delivered training programmes to continue to share her knowledge and passion of Teaching for Mastery.

The curriculum is not always designed coherently, resulting in pupils not seeing links between different subject areas, even when identical or similar concepts are involved. The programme aims to address this.

Participants – two from each school (one maths and one computer science teacher) will attend 4 twilight online sessions.

During the sessions we will explore:

  • methods to help students appreciate the connections and relevance of mathematics in computer science
  • activities in computing which will support students’ mathematics learning,
  • the connections between mathematical reasoning, problem solving and algorithmic thinking in the two disciplines
  • how the learning in computing around the manipulation and use of data can be built upon in mathematics lessons.

Work Group participants will be encouraged to share what they are doing with others in their department to have impact on the practice of others, as well as jointly delivering training to both departmental teams.

How can I get involved?
