Mastering Number at KS2

Knowledge of multiplication and division and its applications forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum and is the gateway to success at secondary school. This project enables pupils in Years 4 and 5 to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense

Who can take part?

This opportunity is open to all schools participating in Teaching for Mastery Work Groups. It is not available to schools in Introductory Work Groups. Lead participants from Work Group schools will be two teachers – one each from Year 4 and Year 5. Support will also be given to maths leads and headteachers.

There are limited places so each Maths Hub will use set criteria to allocate spaces to this Work Group.

What is involved?

Lead Teachers will engage in centrally-led online workshops, once a term. These sessions will support the teachers to understand the materials better, as well as have time to develop their subject expertise to ensure maximum pupil impact through their use.

Lead Teachers will engage in local sessions once a term as participants in a Work Group led by a local Maths Hub Work Group Lead. They will be expected to engage with teachers from other schools through a local online community to reflect on their practice and the progress of their pupils. They will also be asked to provide assessment data for four pupils, once at the beginning of the year and once at the end of the year.

Lead Teachers will need to support all other teachers of Years 4 and 5 in their school in how to use the materials effectively, and to work collaboratively to develop their understanding of children’s progression in applying facts to a range of contexts using a teaching for mastery approach.

What is the cost?

Mastering Number at KS2 is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to all participating, state-funded primary schools in England.

What are the intended outcomes?

Pupil outcomes

Pupils will:

  • develop automaticity in multiplication and division facts through regular practice
  • gain confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense when looking at the multiplicative relationship
  • make good progress towards year group expectations.

Whole-school/departmental policies and approaches

Participants will work with their school/subject leaders to:

  • develop Mastering Number at KS2 as part of the school curriculum in Years 4 and 5
  • develop an understanding of how pupils progress in their knowledge and understanding of multiplicative concepts.

Practice development

Participants will:

  • practise strategies shared in central training and refine their input to best support children’s progress
  • work to develop teaching strategies focused on developing fluency in multiplication and division facts for ALL children
  • develop their understanding of the structures related to the multiplicative relationship.

Professional learning

Participants will:

  • work as part of a professional learning community to reflect on their approaches, deepen their understanding about effective approaches, and refine their practice
  • develop a secure understanding of how to embed pupil understanding and their ability to apply multiplicative reasoning to a range of contexts
  • secure an understanding of the fluency expectations in Year 4 with a focus on supporting pupils to access the multiplication tables check
  • support Year 5 pupils to continue to have automaticity of multiplication and division facts.
