Working partnerships with ITT Providers

This project provides a community which enables ITT providers to work together to develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths provision, with a focus on teaching for mastery.

The group will focus on strengthening  the understanding of teaching for mastery pedagogy.

Who can take part and what are the intended outcomes?

For ITT providers (those responsible for maths provision) in Primary and Secondary sectors

  • curriculum design and supporting resources (mentor guidance, ITTECF etc.) demonstrate and support trainees understanding of the high-quality mathematics provision and the principles of teaching for mastery.

Practice development

  • trainees have opportunities to understand and demonstrate how the ITTECF standards can be exemplified in mathematics provision
  • ensure trainees have some experience of observing, analysing and designing lessons informed by mastery principles
  • mentor feedback to trainees in line with teaching for mastery principles

Professional learning

  • have a deepening understanding of the principles of teaching for mastery and how they directly relate to classroom practice.
  • a deepening understanding of the work of their local Maths Hub and the national Maths Hub Network

Participant information

All DfE-accredited ITT providers will be invited to choose participant(s) with responsibility for leading maths provision, alongside a member of each Maths Hub Leadership and Management Team, to join a regional community. These regional communities will be led by a pair of Regional Community Leads (representing both Higher Education and school-based provision).

Participants in these regional communities will be expected to attend three national two-hour (online) workshops, coordinated by the NCETM team. In addition, participants will collaborate as a regional community for two half days led by their Regional Community Leads. The focus of these communities is to work with Maths Hubs to know how best to support trainee teachers to align their classroom practice with the principles of teaching for mastery.

It is expected that participants, supported by their institution, attend all national and regional meetings, feed back to relevant colleagues, and review their provision in light of the discussions. The ITT provider will commit to the same participant(s) in this community throughout the year.

What is the cost?

The Working Partnerships with ITT Providers project is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating institutions.
